Welcome to the Hinckley Flyers page! Established in 2008, we offer cycle skills coaching in a sporting context for children aged 5 – 16 years old. All coaches are DRB checked, first aid and safeguarding trained and hold the L2 British Cycling coaching qualification. Some coaches have done additional discipline specific modules such as road/time-trialling.
We continue to enjoy the support of Triumph Motorcycles, Normandy Way, Hinckley, LE10 3BZ, who allow us access to their main car park for our coaching sessions which take place every on alternate Saturdays from 2 pm for at least an hour – we do have a tendency to overrun a little especially when the riders are enjoying themselves! Triumph’s car park provides us with a traffic-free, secure environment to coach in. We will greet you at the barrier, sign you on and swipe you in. We ask riders to arrive a little earlier so they can get sorted out and signed on ready to ride at 2pm.
No experience is necessary but participants need to be able to ride a bike. Any type bike will do as long as it is in working order. Helmets are compulsory and no rider is allowed to take part without one.
Sessions aim to be fun, inclusive and teach a range of skills including braking, cornering, group riding, gear changing. While we don’t teach road safety, the skills developed with us are transferrable and will be useful for riding a bike in other settings. Activities are tailored to the numerous variables that need to be taken into account such as the weather and which riders are with us. Our WhatsApp group helps us know who can come each time so the coaches can plan accordingly.
Whilst we do not teach children to ride a bike from scratch, we have had numerous younger siblings coming along on balance bikes. For these youngsters, we set aside a small area for them to practice in with their parents until they have developed enough to join in the main session.
From time to time we also run race events along the principles of British Cycling Go-Ride races. We recreate a true racing atmosphere but with the appreciation that participants are novice riders and the emphasis is on taking part and having fun. |We’ve found a good format to be to create a suitably challenging circuit with the aim of completing as many laps possible in the time allowed and prizes are awarded according to the number of laps each rider achieves.
We are happy for parents stay to watch but equally happy for the children to be dropped off at the beginning of the session and picked up again at the end. All children must be picked up by their responsible adult from the coaching area.
Some sessions take the form of a family ride at other venues such as Hicks Lodge trail centre near Ashby-de-la-Zouch (www.forestryengland.uk/hicks-lodge) or the Conkers National Forest trails (www.nationalforest.org/visit/activities/conkers-circuit). For these, coaches provide the main support but it helps greatly to have a few parents riding too.
